GUWAHATI, Feb 3 – Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from the State
Kirip Chaliha on Tuesday announced that 200 rural libraries have been
identified in the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency and that books and a
book shelf would be provided to all these libraries at his initiative
very soon.

Addressing media persons here, Chaliha said that the
library culture was gradually growing in the State and that was a
positive sign for the problem plagued State.

It needs to be
mentioned here that Chaliha won the last parliamentary elections from
the prestigious Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency by defeating legendary
singer Dr Bhupen Hazarika who had contested as a BJP candidate.

Announcing
his intended projects for the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency just
before the parliamentary polls, Chaliha said that by February 15, he
would distribute the books and the book shelves to the rural libraries.

“Books
and a book shelf worth Rs 10,000 would be provided to each library,” he
said. He also informed that the funds for the rural library project had
come from different organizations including voluntary associations.

Chaliha
further said that a total of 1000 registered clubs have been selected
in his constituency and that a sports kit would be provided to each
club by the end of this month.

Answering to queries from media
persons, Chaliha said that the implementation rate of flagship
programmes like the National Rural Health Mission was quite encouraging
in his constituency but he also acknowledged that progress of certain
welfare projects like the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme
was not at all satisfactory.
