> Are you still taking advantage of that? :)
*** Are you kidding? These are life-long debts that no one ever repays
fully.
Why do you think I invested on it :-)? It is lifelong income.

*** True! But that does not make the two of us special. Just imagine
why WE all are in this
juhalor-mel, in spite of the wide differences among some of us on some
issues: Because
we are bound together by the same soft-corners about some of the other
issues.
*** Can you give me a little more info. on the orchid? Orchids are
notorious for their
finicky cultural requirements. Few are alike. Do the flowers resemble
butterflies
and with strapping leaves resembling mediterranean goats' ears
( slightly drooping or
erect, two to three inches wide X four to eight inches long) ? If so, it
would be a phalaenopsis . It is one of the easiest to raise in the
house.
Yes, you do need special potting medium. You can buy it in your local
nursery or
even the big-box-hardware stores like Home Depot. You may cover the
roots,if
they fit in the pot. Do not force them into the pot. f they hang out,
that is fine.
They should not be placed in direct sunlight, but lot of indirect,
bright light is good.
During mild weather you can place the pot outside in a permanently
shaded spot.
They love humid conditions, so Houston is perfect. In the winter,
place it at the sill
of a north or east facing window and mist it with water from a spray
bottle if the house
gets too dry from heating. Once a day is good.
You can feed it during the warm months weekly with orchid food. I mix
some of it
in the misting bottle and spray it on the leaves once a week. Do not
feed that often
in the winter. Watch out for snails and slugs. They will eat the young
leaves and flower
buds. The other pest is scales. If scales appear, spray malathion
solution once a week
for two or three weeks, until they are gone. A greener solution is to
take a Q-tip, dip in rubbing
alcohol and swab the scales off.
Watering once a week is enough. When on vacation, don't worry. They
would survive no
watering for a month even.
If placed outside in reach of sprinklers or open to frequent rain, you
must TILT the pot,
so that water will not collect and remain in the center cup formed by
emerging leaves.
Collected water will cause a crown-rot and kill the plant. That is
why, in nature, in the Himalayan
and other Asian mountain environments where they grow naturally, they
grow hanging
down to one side.
