Very good article and contextual, U. But Deresiewicz is dealing with a
different problem than
India's. Here in the US it is a class issue, of pedigrees and elitism.
While it is not that pervasive
in India ( it is beginning to spread however--the name brand 'convent'
schools, the IITs, IIMs
and so forth). The American problem however does not leave the largest
body of students
in the trash heap. The plumber to whom Deresiewicz could not relate,
learnt a valuable trade
even though he did not go to college or aspire to be an ivy-leaguer.
And he makes a good living,
is a nation-builder and an important member of HIS society.
I had a different aspect of this exam. writing skills and test scores
as a measure of education
thang in mind: A culture that brands those who rank high as
achievers, intelligent, and worth
looking after well while those that don't as being forgettable and not
worth wasting time on in subsequent
arenas of education. What is even more astounding is that society
continues to hold those test ranks
as the measure of ARRIVAL, of life's achievement, not mere mile-posts
of a journey, just a point of
preparation.
Remember how in high school the top scoring kids get all the attention
and coddling in class, while
the rest get relegated to the waste heap? What a waste that, and
society ends up becoming the loser.
It is time to think about the system and the attitudes along with it.
