Foundation of Assam Hills Medical College laid

DIPHU, Jan 19: Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today laid the foundation stone of the Assam Hills Medical College and Research Institute at Bagmara in Diphu in presence of MP Biren Singh Engti, State HAD Minister Khorsing Engti, Parliamentary Secretary Bidya Sing Engleng, MLA Mansing Rongpi and others. The foundation stone of the medical institution was supposed to be laid by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who could not attend the ceremony due to the inclement weather.
Addressing the gathering, Sarma said that the Assam Hills Medical College and Research Institute would be the fourth new medical college in the State that needed at least a new medical college at an interval of ten years in order to face the challenges on the health care front. The cost of the new medical college at Dihpu, according to official sources, would be around Rs 300 crore, and the college was supposed to be completed in 36 moths with facilities like 300 beds, an air-conditioned lecture hall, a modern library, intake capacity of 100 students and absorbing about 1,500 youths as employees, besides 486 nurses and 450 grade IV staff.
