The University of North Carolina’s Hussman School of Journalism and
Media invites applications to its MA and doctoral programs for fall 2020
admission. In addition to our long-standing specializations in health
communication; media processes and production; political, social, and
strategic communication; media uses and effects; and media law and
policy, we are especially excited about our newly-launched Center for
Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP). Master’s and PhD
students interested in misinformation, partisanship, polarization,
propaganda, platforms, political institutions, journalism, and related
issues will have opportunities to collaborate on interdisciplinary
research projects led by the center’s four principal researchers:

  *

Deen Freelon, associate professor, Hussman School

  *

Daniel Kreiss, associate professor, Hussman School

  *

Alice Marwick, assistant professor, Department of Communication

  *

Zeynep Tufekci, associate professor, School of Information and
    Library Sciences

Graduate members of CITAP will have access to a wide variety of
resources, including generous travel funding, privileged digital
datasets, a newly refurbished dedicated lab space, workshops and reading
groups, and faculty and graduate students from the School of Information
and Library Sciences and the Department of Communication. In addition to
the principal researchers, potential collaborators will include
postdoctoral researchers, visiting scholars, affiliate faculty, a
dedicated programmer, and a new core faculty member who will join us in
August 2020.

Applicants to the Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s doctoral
program will be considered for CITAP affiliation. The Hussman School
offers generous competitive funding packages including the prestigious
Roy H. Park fellowships which guarantee three years of funding,
including tuition waivers, a generous stipend, and technology and
research funding. The Hussman School features an approximately 80%
placement rate in tenure-track and postdoctoral positions and over $1M
in external funding annually.
