Hi,

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5421478375667736920

How many Assamese women are abused - not only in North Indian brothels but in their own home?

starnge as it might seem  this story of the recent movie Provoked based on a true story of a London couple (Indian girl killing her husband by bruning him in his sleep) is a tale which seems so complicated for me that this is the third try at watching the movie online (could bear to watch it - seemed so depressing) . However, due to a variety of reason -esp the new research done by Harvard and Indian ICMR I feel compelled to watch, Still after this decison to watch - this is a second attmpt - it seemes so depressing. Fortified with a stiff drink I have watched half of it on Google Video -seems no copyright violation (the movie owner seems t have placed it on Google -for social resaon). My platop generally lies on a booklet prepared ofr  schoolkids called (Born Into Brothels) title of anothere Google Video documentary.

Well , I am not able to say that does the movie have more in common with my mother's story who married a much more educated and "modern" man and did all the work she was assigned to (albeit not upto his satisfaction) and suffered beatings from my father when he was frustrated with something or woth her functioning-only when we sons grew up we put a stop to this (and if I remember correctly same happened with my unlces when their sons grew up). But my mom never hurt a fly (even her occasional slap seemed like a pat on the cheek. My father has/had hard hands. My father left my mom in 1997 June 1st (the day I completed one year at my first job - at www.expressindia.com ) but she never hurt a fly.

My sister in law, whom I have not so far in my entire life (ofcourse I have met many sisters-in-law) but the one who is serving life sentence in Central Jail in Jaipur.. She seems to be the herioine of the movie - but from what I have heard she seems to be the enterprising woman who was lured by a no good man who instigated her to commit a petty crime (rob her husband in train bound for Nepal) and ended up druuging her husband which led to his death on Aug 12, 2004. I had been looking after him for 45 days (12 hours per night ) at the state hospital since the day he was found by the railway police in th Delhi bound train.

Now if someone has read a book called CallGirls by a Miranda House Sociology (lady)Professor, some  women are pushed.into crime , some do it readily.

I wonder if the movie provoked  is factually true for all such murder cases of husbands by wives or if (if you see Discovery Channel's cold cases etc) boyfriends, lovers and other such folks play an important role in crimes.

That said, weight of my chest (as far as my cousin's death is concered - he lived in Nepal - where I have never been) here is a Harvard research info on wife beating in India and its consequences on HIV affliction on these wives http://harvardscience.harvard.edu/medicine-health/articles/women-india-abused-husbands-far-greater-risk-hiv-infection
